Making Barking
Music with Darts and Hard Dance wizard Barry Diston
My first visit to
Fidget Studios came about after I'd heard a Hard House tune called
"Prophecy" by DJ Resh. I really loved the vocal sample on it and
managed to track down the tune's engineer - one Barry Diston (whose
name I recognised from his releases on Sundissential Records and
Fidget Hard). At first I was just going to email him to ask for the
sample to use in a Hardcore track of my own, but then I thought why
not go down to Fidget and do the track there... I was aware that he
had recently diversified into making Hardcore with his and Mister
Stewart's "Tell Me A Lie / No More" release on Relentless Vinyl, and
I thought his Hard Dance influence might help me find the darker yet
still uplifting sound I was aiming for with the tune...
A few weeks later
"Real Good Time" was completed and I had my first release - on
Relentless Digital (the digital sister label of Relentless Vinyl) -
great stuff!
First and foremost,
working with Barry is a lot of fun. We regularly have a good laugh
at some of the sounds we get out of the Fidget kit (see their
website for details) and
when he can remember whether you have milk and/or sugar he makes a
fantastic cuppa (see pics on the right for details!). I try to have
each tune written and planned from start to finish before we begin,
which helps things run a lot more smoothly on the day and gives us
more time to get things sounding spot on and include some of the
more subtle elements that give a track more sparkle.
After I've spent a
while caning the tune we've just done, listening out for any little
gremlins we might have missed on the day and noting down any
adjustments that need making to improve the overall sound, I give
Barry a shout and we decide whether it's something that he can fix
or if it's going to take a bit more work and should wait until the
next time I'm down at the studio.
I'm really happy with
the tunes we've done this year, both in terms of musical content and
production quality - with each project we take things that little
bit further and the range of sounds we've covered has been
really pleasing. Can't wait to see what 2008 brings!
